PM Modi Condoles Demise of Begum Khaleda Zia, Writes to BNP Leader Tarique Rahman
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a condolence letter to Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), on the passing away of his mother and former Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. In the letter, the Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow and conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and the people of Bangladesh.
Recalling his personal interaction with the late leader, Prime Minister Modi wrote that he “warmly recalls” his meeting and discussions with Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka in June 2015. He described her as “a leader of rare resolve and conviction,” noting her historic role as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh and a towering figure in the nation’s political landscape.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Begum Khaleda Zia made “many important contributions to the development of Bangladesh,” underlining her enduring impact on the country’s democratic journey. He also acknowledged her role in fostering bilateral ties, stating that she contributed significantly to strengthening relations between India and Bangladesh during her tenure.
In his message to Tarique Rahman, PM Modi extended prayers for strength and solace to the family in this moment of grief. He emphasized that Begum Khaleda Zia’s leadership and legacy would be remembered not only within Bangladesh but also by friends and well-wishers across the region.
The condolence letter reflects India’s recognition of Begum Khaleda Zia’s stature as a regional leader and reiterates the spirit of respect and continuity in India-Bangladesh relations, even amid political transitions and differences, underscoring shared history and people-to-people bonds between the two neighboring nations.
